The Santa Barbara Road Race is a true test of grit and strategy. The 14-mile loop combines short, steep climbs with windy flats, offering plenty of opportunities for moves to stick — or fail. With strong showings from Team Evoke, Team 805, and Team Go Fast, the race was going to be a tactical battle.
The first climb set the tone: fast but steady. The downhill, however, was where the race started to unfold. It was a fast descent, and I made a critical mistake by shuffling to the back of the group. As we hit the flats, a three-man break launched, with Evoke, 805, and Go Fast all represented. I immediately knew this was dangerous. Unfortunately, the field wasn’t about to let me bridge across solo on the windy flats.
Having patience is not my forte, but I had to be. On lap two of three I bided my time, waiting for the climb. As we hit the base, I made my move: a full-gas attack, fueled by frustration I snapped the elastic and got away, now what? I committed to a long solo effort, for the next 28 miles.
I buried myself for the next hour. We all know what that's like, so I won't burden you with the details, but as I crested the final climb, the breakaway was within reach. With 300 meters to go, I caught them. I emptied the tank and landed on the podium.
This race for me was a reminder of why I do this — why I train, why I push through tough moments, and why I need to take more risks. It wasn’t a perfect race; I made mistakes. But I never gave up, and I trusted the process. Sometimes, that’s all it takes to turn a tough day into a memorable one.
Here’s to taking chances, trusting the bike, and giving it everything you’ve got. Next stop, Valley Of The Sun Stage Race
